St. Sebastian’s win a thriller to seal Semi-Final spot

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, registered a thrilling 4-run win over St. Peter’s College, Colombo, to secure their place in the Semi-Finals of the U17 Division 1 Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament 2023.  

Having won the toss, St. Peter’s College invited the opposition to take the first lease of the wicket at Royal College Grounds in Colombo. 

Adesh Almeda and Kaveesha Perera opened the batting for St. Sebastian’s College, and the duo added a decent 33-run partnership for the first wicket. Perera and No. 3 batter Vimath Dinsara then put on a half-century stand for the second wicket, laying a solid platform for the rest of the batters to follow. 

However, there wasn’t any significant partnership from the middle and low order as St. Sebastian’s College were restricted to 216 runs in the allotted 50 overs.  

Perera was the top scorer for the lads from Moratuwa as he made 63 runs off 109 balls with 7 fours and a six, while Fernando contributed with vital 46 runs off 51 balls with 6 fours. Joshua Sebastian was the pick of the bowlers for St. Peter’s College as he claimed 3 wickets for 44 runs in his 10-over spell. 

In reply, St. Peter’s College got off to a solid start as their opening pair Hiruka Silva and Savi Fernando, put on a 33-run stand for the first wicket. No. 3 batter Asadisa De Silva steadied St. Peter’s innings, building crucial partnerships worth 42 and 56 with Silva and Joshua Sebastian for the 2nd and 3rd wicket respectively.  

However, St. Peter’s College witnessed a sudden batting collapse to lose 8 wickets for just 91 runs and were bowled out for 222 runs, handing a thrilling 4-run win to St. Sebastian’s College.
