Week 2 of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 brought no shortage of excitement, intensity, and milestone moments. Although the majority of games were played under grey skies and slippery conditions, the action on the grounds was anything but dull. Despite the wet conditions adding an extra layer of difficulty, testing the skill and discipline of each side, the teams managed to deliver some outstanding performances as this week saw more teams enter the picture as title hopefuls. Here’s a look back at all the key moments and standout performances from a dramatic and rain-soaked round of fixtures.
Favourites continue to have dominant momentum
Royal College, St Peters College, Trinity College, and Isipathana College continued their dominant run of form with convincing victories in tough conditions.
- Defensive Masterclass for the Double Blues get them their 2nd Win of the League
- Mckyle-Mayanka combination stars as the dominant Thomians outclass Zahira.
- Ananda College ends the 17-year wait in Rajagiriya!
- Mahanama Make History in the Mud at Ratmalana
Royal College travelled to Hill Country to face Sri Sumangala College in week 2. The Royalists were deemed as favourites once again and stayed true to form as they thumped their opponents 53 to 3 in grueling conditions. The Royalists showcased their experience, adapting to the muddy conditions instantly by putting on a tactical masterclass. The kicking game combined with strong forward play and unbreakable Royal defense was too much to handle for the lads from Sri Sumangala. Sri Sumangala will look to get into the win column next week as they host Vidyartha College at Trinity Grounds, Pallekelle in an exciting All Kandy Clash. The Royalists will look to stay unbeaten as they will face St. Joseph’s College at the ever-famous Jurassic Park.
St. Peters College were equally impressive at Nittawela, clinching a comfortable 24 – 8 win against St. Anthony’s College. After a tight first half in muddy conditions, The Peterites levelled up in the second, scoring a total of 4 tries to leave the Antonians reeling. With a perfect balance between their pack and backline, the defending champs, now back in full force, proved why they are currently back to back league champions. The Bamba Brigade will face Science College at home next week where they will be considered as heavy favourites. The Antonians will look to get that all important first win of the season next week, but they will be in for another tough challenge as they will take on the deadly Double Blues at Nittawela Grounds.
Trinity College, fresh off their dominant week 1 victory, hosted Vidyartha College at Pallekele in what promised to be a fierce battle. The Lions, however, had other ideas, proving that they were the kings of the jungle as they thrashed the Tigers 74 to 14. From amazing backline moves to brilliant forward link up play, Trinity College looks to be one of the most balanced sides in the entire competition, staying true to their name as Championship Favourites. Next week, they will take on Thurstan College at Sugathadasa Stadium where Trinity will be heavy favourites. Vidyartha College will look to get back on track with a win at Pallekelle against Sri Sumangala in week 3.
Isipathana College produced a 32–22 victory over Kingswood College at Bogambara Stadium. The rain-filled mud bath made things complicated for the Green Machine in the 1st half as they got off to yet another slow start, only leading the hungry Kingswoodians by 2 points at halftime. However, The Green Machine was a well-oiled one after lemons, as they cruised to a 17 point lead. Kingswood managed to score 2 more tries late in the game but it proved to be too little too late. Isipathanas’ adaptability and resilience set them apart from their opponents this week. Isipathana’s hill country trip will continue as they will take on Dharmaraja College in week 3. The Kingswoodians who have had a good fight in both their games so far, will desperately look to get a win as they will take on Zahira College in Colombo.
Wesley, S. Thomas establish themselves as forces to be reckoned with
The Double Blues & The Thomians puts the whole league on notice as they enter the title picture with 2 statement victories against tough opposition.
- Thomas College clashed against Zahira College at the Big Club grounds in what promised to be an evenly contested game. The Thomians, who narrowly escaped with a win in the opening week, were up against the Tankers who dominated their game in week 1. The lads from the School by the Sea put all doubt to rest early as they dominated Zahira at home, winning the game with a convincing scoreline of 43 to 19.
In the recent past, the Thomians have been dark horse contenders, coming ever so close to levelling up to being championship favourites. This dominant win showed the Rugby that the lads from Mt.lavinia have finally arrived at the title party. They will look to remain unbeaten as they will take on the newcomers Mahanama College next week. The Tankers will look to get back to the win column as they will take on Kingswood College in what hopes to be a thrilling encounter.
Wesley College went up against D.S. Senanayake College at CR&FC in a fiery contest. The
Double Blues, however, outclassed the Dons in all aspects of the game, cruising to a brilliant 29 to 10 victory. Both teams came into the game as week 1 winners, but it was Wesley who kept that momentum going as they held DS to just 1 try, whilst scoring 4 tries themselves to secure a bonus point.
Just like S Thomas College, the double blues have been constantly knocking on the door of being considered as title hopefuls but judging by their play in the opening two weeks, it looks like they too have earned the seat at the favourites table. Currently sitting at the top of their table over Isipathana, the Double Blues will look to remain there as they take on St. Anthony’s College next week at Nittawela. The Dons will go up against Ananda College where they will be eager to keep their title aspirations alive with a win.
Newcomers create history & Joes get the Victory
The league’s newest entrants, Mahanama College and Ananda College created history for their alma maters as both schools pulled off week 2 victories while the lads from Darley Road put on a strong show, managing to get their first win of the season
Ananda College hosted Science College at Rajagiriya and were made to work hard for their
32–26 victory. This was a milestone moment for the maroons as they managed to get their 1st Segment A win in 17 years. This game was a rugby fan’s dream as both teams traded blow for blow up until the final whistle. Both teams scored 4 tries each, securing bonus points but it was 2 penalties converted in tense moments which saw Ananda pull away with the ecstatic victory. They will be drooling in confidence as they take on the Dons at home while Science College takes on the defending champs St. Peters at Bambalapitiya.
At the Air Force Grounds, Mahanama College made history by defeating Dharmaraja
College 15 – 5, to get their first ever top-flight victory. In a low scoring affair, it was the spirited defense of Mahanama that made the difference as they managed to hold the Rajans scoreless for the entire game after conceding the opening try in the 4th minute. This will give Mahanama a huge boost of confidence. Knowing how good winning in the top division feels like, they will look to once again emerge victorious next week as they take on the Thomians. The Rajans on the other hand will be in do or die mode as they take on championship favourites Isipathana College at Nittawela.
St Joseph’s College comfortably beat Thurstan College 26 – 5 at Longdon Place. Failing to hold on to the win in the opening week, the boys from Darley Road were determined to get their victory account opened against Thurstan and this was successfully achieved as they played a forward heavy game in mud-drenched conditions. Despite the wet weather, the Josepian defense held strong throughout the game, only conceding 1 try in the dying minutes of the encounter.
This win will give them a much-needed boost as they will take on the Royal Tuskers at Jurassic Park in what promises to be another classic in a historic rivalry. Thurstan College will be in for another grueling encounter as they host Trinity College at Sugathadasa Stadium in week 3.
