With the first round of the 2018 Singer Schools’ Rugby League coming to a close, the Plate segment is set to heat up as eight schools take each other on in a battle to reserve their spot in the top division.

As Vidyartha College, Science College, Maliyadeva College and Lumbini College qualify to play for the Plate Championship, the opportunity for either of them to enter the top division is just four games away. After topping their groups in the ‘B’ Division, these four teams will now compete against Dharmaraja  College, D.S. Senanayake College, St. Anthony’s Collge and S. Thomas’ College who failed to make it to the ‘super eight’ in the top tier.

Unlike in the top division, all eight teams in this segment will carry forward the points of the match that they played against each other in the first round (ex: STC will carry forward the points they accumulated against SACK). This will be an added advantage for the teams as they come into the games with points on-board.

S. Thomas’ registered their 1st win against St. Anthony’s this week and will carry their points forward to the Plate. So will St. Anthony’s who collected two bonus points.

The game between the two underdogs, Science and Maliyadeva, is expected to be a thriller as both teams remain unbeaten coming into the second round.

There can’t be a better opportunity for the Maliyadeva to make it to the top division, following their success in the Premier trophy as well maintaining an overwhelming unbeaten record in the Division B

The promoting teams from the Division IIB segment

Science College was relegated to the lower division after having had a disastrous season last year, but this time around the spirited boys from Mt. Lavinia are looking to redeem themselves having won all their games in the first round. After being relegated  are playing for the Plate Championship.

Science have been undefeated in the division with the underdogs from Kandy, Vidyartha in second with the loss to Science

The fixtures for the Plate Championship will be based on the points and rankings of the teams

Group I Group II
S. Thomas’ College (Div IA) D. S. Senanayake College (Div IIA)
St. Anthony’s College (Div IA) Dharmaraja College (Div IIA)
Science College (Div IB) Maliyadeva College (Div IIB)
Vidyartha College (Div IIB) Lumbini College (Div IIB)

The Thomian’s however earned their ticket to the top division in 2014 after being relegated in 2011. This year will be a real tester for the boys as they compete in the Plate division for the first time since its inception. St. Anthony’s and DS on the other hand have frequently found themselves in the Plate segment as their first-round performance in the past few years have let them down.

Dharmaraja College has been a top contender in the ‘A’ Division ever since the glory year in 2013, but unfortunately a disappointing first round finish this year has put the Rajans in a threatening position.
