All arrangements have been made to stage country’s first ever BWF Sanctioned World Ranking Event; the YONEX SUN RISE Sri Lanka International Challenge, from the 4th -8th of June 2014 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
According to an announcement made by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association, the Sri Lanka Badminton Association the chief organizer of the tournament has garnered the full support of the World Governing body BWF, BAC and the Ministry Of Sports.
“A great deal of preparations has been already done and we are looking into finishing touches .What is more interesting is for us to welcome the foreign players and officials who have started flying down to the tournament destination “ stated Badminton chief Suraj Dandeniya.
Endorsing the same opinion Tournament Director Ajith Wijayasinghe was of the opinion “the excitement is at a higher level, the organizing committee is working tireless, and I am sure the event will be a through and through success.”
Meanwhile, the BAC Regional umpires course 2014 commenced today at the OPA auditorium in Colombo. The workshop will continue for two days with the participation of local and foreign umpires and conducted the BAC Assessors Ms YAU LIN NA & NATHAI SORNPRACHUM
Another important occasion alongside the tournament will be the visit by the world renown Badminton coachPeter Higgins facilitated by the National Olympic Committee and the SLBA .He will act the role of advisor to the Sri Lankan National coaches and the participating players. Mr. Peter Higgins will also engage in a special assessment program of the under 11/13/15/17 juniors in various aspects such as Technical movement, technical racket, tactics, physical, test score, training & tournament schedules.
The tournament that will feature players from 18 countries and umpires from 05 counties, is billed to be one of the biggest in the region, and will be staged from 4th to 8th June in grand scale thus attracting the attention of the world badminton fraternity.
