Heart-stopping finish as 14-man Peterites edge Wesley to stay Undefeated

Dialog Schools Rugby League 2026

In what will be remembered as an absolute classic in the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2026, St. Peter’s College survived a monumental scare to keep their unbeaten streak intact, defeating a resilient Wesley College outfit at the St. Peter’s College Grounds in Bambalapitiya. Plagued by cards and trailing for a large portion of the match, the Bamba Brigade relied on raw grit and championship pedigree to pull off a dramatic comeback, finishing the first round at the top of their group.

The match lived up to its high-stakes billing from the first whistle, with Wesley College showing zero fear on rival territory. Testing the Peterites with aggressive midfield rushes and a highly physical defensive setup, the Double Blues forced early errors from the hosts. It did not take long for discipline to become the focal point of the match, as a rapid sequence of warnings culminated in the referee flashing a flurry of yellow cards to both teams, completely disrupting the flow of the game.

Wesley College drew first blood early in the first half when Mohomed Fawaz calmly stepped up and slotted over a penalty to put the visitors on the board. (SPC 00 – 03 WC)

St. Peter’s struggled to find their rhythm early on, and things went from bad to worse when an attempted kick was brilliantly charged down. Ayan Hussain chased the loose ball with blistering pace and touched down for an unconverted try, leaving the home crowd stunned. (SPC 00 – 08 WC)

Stung by the early deficit, the Peterites responded using their most reliable weapon: the rolling maul. From a clean 5-metre lineout, the forward pack organised seamlessly and rumbled over the line, allowing skipper Shenuka Perera to score. The conversion was missed, but the hosts had opened their account. (SPC 05 – 08 WC)

Just before the halftime whistle, St. Peter’s took the lead for the first time in the match. Breaking through the Wesley midfield with a brilliant line break, Lakindu Ranasinghe went over under the posts. Ashok Krishan added the extra two points to send the hosts into the sheds with a narrow advantage. (SPC 12 – 08 WC)

Half Time: St. Peter’s College 12 – 08 Wesley College

The complexion of the match changed dramatically in the 46th minute. A reckless high challenge from Peterite vice-captain Revone Perera left the referee with no choice but to issue a red card. Reduced to 14 men for the remaining 24 minutes, the Bamba Brigade suddenly looked vulnerable.

Wesley sensed the opportunity and mounted relentless pressure, severely testing the Peterite discipline. In the 55th minute, Shirash Perera was sent to the sin bin with a yellow card, temporarily reducing St. Peter’s to just 13 players.

Making full use of the numerical advantage, Wesley stretched the Peterite defence thin. Moving the ball quickly through a sharp backline move, they broke through to score a crucial try. The conversion drifted wide, but Wesley had reclaimed the lead with only minutes remaining. (SPC 12 – 13 WC)

With their unbeaten season hanging in the balance, tension reached fever pitch in Bambalapitiya. Deep into the dying moments of the game, Wesley pinned the hosts inside their own 22-metre line. After conceding a crucial penalty in their danger zone, everyone expected the Peterites to find touch.

Instead, a sensational quick tap sparked a breathtaking end-to-end counterattack.

The ball eventually found its way to Rashwin Sabar, who produced a magical solo run, weaving effortlessly through a scrambling Wesley defence to cross for the match-winning try. The conversion was missed, but it mattered little as the Peterites kicked the ball into touch after the restart to seal a nail-biting victory on home turf.

A couple of the biggest edits were tightening repeated phrasing (“match lived up to its billing”), smoothing rugby terminology (“slotted over a penalty”, “line break”, “counterattack”), and making tense and punctuation more consistent throughout.
