St. Joseph’s College and Ananda College recorded first-innings victories over S. Thomas’ College and St. Benedict’s College respectively in their drawn under 19 division one encounters which concluded on Saturday.

St. Joseph’s College vs S. Thomas’ College

St. Joseph’s College took major honours in their drawn 112th annual cricket encounter for the Gilmour Jayasuriya Trophy match against S. Thomas’ College at Mount Lavinia.

Batting first, the visitors posted an excellent 287 for 8 in 80 overs before declaring their innings. Left-handed Nipun Sumanasinghe top-scored with 93 while wicket-keeper batsman Shewon Fonseka made 60.

Thomians in their reply were dented strongly by the spin-trio Malshan Rodrigo, Harin Cooray and Charuka Raveen. The hosts’ surprisingly declared with 216 runs on the board and with 2 wickets remaining. Opener Ravindu Kodituwakku top-scored with 38.

The Josephians in their second essay batted till close of play. They made 206 for 5 at the back of two 40s by Revan Kelly and Sandaruwan Rodrigo.

Ananda College vs St. Benedict’s College

Ananda College had to be satisfied with only a first-innings win against St. Benedict’s College at Kotahena.

Off-spinner Supun Waragoda’s 7-wicket haul and paceman Kavishka Anjula’s hat-trick helped Ananda restrict St. Benedict’s to 97 runs on day one but the hosts’ recovered well on day two in the back of Thulina Dilshan’s excellent century.

Ananda made 219 in their first innings after being 125 for 4 overnight. Rahal Avishka and Kalana Perera made 40s while fast-bowler Geethal Fernando picked up a five-wicket haul for the home team.

St. Benedict’s – 97 all out in 51.5 overs: Thulina Dilshan 29, Supun Waragoda 7/24, Kavishka Anjula 3/11.
