Sri Lanka’s Badminton prodigy Dumindu Abeywickrama made a magical move recently by breaking into the world’s top 100 ranks. Dumindu currently ranks at the 94th position, and he is the third Sri Lankan player to reach the world’s top 100 ranks. Dumindu’s recent performances in the international tournaments pave the way for the elevation in his ranking level in the world.
Dumindu is a proud product of Royal College, Colombo, and he started the racket sport at a very early stage. From his school days to the present, Dumindu trained under several experienced coaches, and he soon emerged and performed on the international stage due to the commitment of his coaches. Hence, he managed to break into the top 40 in the Junior World Badminton Rankings.
In 2022, Dumindu got the divine opportunity to represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, United Kingdom. By featuring in the Men’s team event, Dumindu and his men unluckily fell short of a medal after reaching the quarter Finals. In the Men’s Singles event, Dumindu managed to reach the Pre-Quarter Finals (top 16), etching his name in the Badminton history of Sri Lanka.

A couple of years ago, Dumindu won the bronze medal at the International Badminton Future Series played in Shimkent, Kazakhstan. Then Dumindu stepped into the Latin American Circuit Badminton series with the objective of improving his world rankings. There, he managed to conclude his successful campaign with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
Dumindu clinched his first medal of the tour at the VLL Guatemala Future Series 2025, held from 7 to 9 September in Guatemala. Unluckily, Dumindu met the tournament champion, the Olympian Kevin Cordon (with the world rank of 77), in the Semi Final, and went down after giving a good fight.

Then, Dumindu performed well in the Il Costa Rica Future Series 2025 held from 9 to 13 September in San Jose, Costa Rica. However Dumindu’s winning streak ended against Guatemala’s champion shuttler, Kevin Cordon, at the Final, earning him a coveted silver medal.
Thereafter, Dumindu clinched another silver medal at the “I La Perla Del Otun Future Series 2025”, held from 24 to 28 September in Pereira, Colombia. Dumindu had a dream run in the tournament with back-to-back straight wins to reach the Final, where he suffered a 2-1 loss after a tough fight against USA’s Enrico Asuncion.
Dumindu clinched a landmark gold medal at the Guatemala International Challenge 2025 held from 30 September to 5 October in Guatemala. There, the young Sri Lankan talent executed a highly technical and tactical play to reach the final with an impressive record of five straight victories. The final saw a thumping victory against Mark Alaca Shelley of the USA, presently ranked 106 in BWF, 21-18 and 21-13, by clinching the maiden gold medal in the Latin American Series.

Dumindu entered his next hurdle at the XIV Santo Domingo Open 2025 Badminton Championship at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. After being undefeated until the Semi Finals, Dumindu suffered a straight loss to Mark Alaca Shelly of the USA, who won the crucial decider by 21/16 and 21/19, and had to be satisfied with a bronze.
However, Dumindu managed to bounce back in the II Venezuela International 2025 held from 22 to 26 October by clinching another gold. There, Dumindu enjoyed a series of easy victories before the tough three-setter final battle against Tobias Kuenzi of Switzerland. After being defeated in the first set by 21 – 10 points, Dumindu never gave up and came back strong to win the 2nd and 3rd sets (by 21-18 and 21-12 points).

The champion shuttler cemented his legacy as one of the greatest in island Badminton history, capturing his 7th consecutive medal in the Men’s Singles event at the V Mexican International Challenge 2025 – Tournament, which was held a week ago. After a successful journey in the preliminaries and knockouts, Dumindu reached the Final, and after giving a good fight, he lost again to the champion shuttler from the USA, Mark Alcala Shelly (world rank 83), finally losing to Alcala by 21 – 13, 21 – 11 points. Still, Dumindu secured his 7th consecutive podium finish with a silver and concluded the series on a high note.
During the series, he was guided by his temporary Coach, Rohith Hasale Gowda, and his training schedule was coordinated from Sri Lanka by National Coach Yukthi Perera with the support of Sri Lanka Badminton.
All of the above victories can be considered as a testament to his unique talent and unwavering commitment, and he has already displayed promising signs of being a competent player. As his target, Dumindu aims to feature in the Olympics and to win a medal by bringing fame to his motherland.
