A rare success for Sri Lanka sports came as the men’s and women’s throwball outfits managed to clinch both titles at the Asian Throwball Championship 2025. The tournament went across a couple of days (2nd – 3rd may 2025) and played at the Gedung Olahraga Raja Djafar Indoor Stadium in Tiban, Batam, Indonesia. This landmark victory will elevate the interest of the game in the general public and will motivate youth players to be a part of this magnificent and emerging sport.
Men’s Competition
In the men’s tournament Sri Lanka was in the fray with the hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Indian A and India B sides. Sadly Bangladesh and Pakistan did not participate in the elite event after the tournament’s venue was shifted from Malaysia to Indonesia.
In the first round, the formidable Sri Lanka Men’s Throwball outfit managed to book their place in the final with a clean sweep against all the rival nations. India – A side were the other finalists who only went down to the strong Sri Lankan side.
In the finals Sri lankan mens outfit had a walk in the park as they managed to beat Indian lads in two straight set wins (2 – 0). First set was won by Sri lanka with a score of 25 – 13, and the second set came with a 25 – 08 victory. At the end of the day Sri Lankan side led by former Isipathana player Gihan Hansajith was crowned as the champions of the men’s category.

Women’s Competition
In the Women’s tournament there was less competition compared to men’s competition and strong Sri lankan lassess and Indian ladies have booked their place in the final. The first set was a thriller and Sri Lanka managed to get a hard fought win in the nail biting set as 25 – 21. In the second set Sri lankan ladies comprehensively outclassed indians with a score of 25 – 13 and registered a 2 – 0 commanding victory.

Achini Madushani (Captain), Pakeerthan Kiruththika (Vice Captain), Pakeerthan Renuka, Kaneshwaran Rammiya, Ushani Madushika, Minali Barnes, Thilini Jayaratna, Subodha Gamage, Paskaran Sathurja, Vikshan Yokitha, and Kasuntha Thathsarani.
Both of the champion sides were trained under the watchful eyes of the Head Coach Janaki Samaratunga. Chanika Chathurangi and Sithum Vimantha were the Assistant Coaches for Men’s and Women’s outfits respectively while the President of Sri lanka Throwball Federation Mr. Rumold Fernando and Swarna Fernando acted as the team managers. Mohammed Fawas was the Sri lankan team co-ordinator.
