The final of the girls’ matches of the ITF junior 2016 Asia / U14 Oceania Pre-qualifying tournament will take place on the 8th of March. The match is expected to be a thrilling fight between the Sri Lankan team and the Philippines and will be held at the SLTA courts.

The final will consist of two singles and one doubles. Anika Seneviratne – defending Champion of the Singles title will play the first singles match for Sri Lanka. A student of Ladies’ College, Seneviratne won the ITF under 14 junior singles Championships last year Sri Lankan Girls Qualify For Finalsdefeating top seeded player Mahin Qureshi of Pakistan.  The second match will be played by Anjalika Kurera from Ave Maria, Negombo whose most recent success was at the ITF Asia 14 & U Development Championships – Division 2 where she won the doubles title. She will be partnered by Savini Jayasuriya of Bishop’s College who was the Girls’ Under 14 Singles Champion at the Tamil Union SLTA Open Ranking Tennis Tournament that concluded a few weeks ago. The power trio who’ve had outright wins of 3-0 against Lebanon, Iran, Turkmenistan and Nepal to enter the final will give it their best shot to triumph over the team from Philippines who had also won outright victories during the tournament.

To enter the final, Sri Lanka beat Lebanon, 6-0, 6-1 in the second single, 6-4, 6-2 in the first and 6-2, 6-2 in the doubles.

Philippine players Miles Alexandra Vitaliano and Alexandra Eala won their singles opposing Lebanon 5-7 7-5 6-3 and 6-0 6-0, respectively. Their doubles duo won with a score of 6-1 4-6 [10-5] to proceed to the final.

Meanwhile the Under 14 Boys’ matches was worked out at the Gymkhana courts since last Friday. On day four of the tournament, the Sri Lankan boys Ashen Silva and Nelaka Dissanayake won their doubles against the Iranis, 7-5 7-5. Nelaka Dissanayake also won his singles, 6-4 6-2. However, Irani player Sohrab Dokmehchin had the edge over Silva and beat him 6-4 6-2 giving Sri Lanka a 2-1 win. The Sri Lankan team, ranking third overall, will face no.1 ranked Kazakhstan on the 8th.

In the other matches, Kuwait beat Iraq, Singapore beat Oman, Kazakhstan beat Kyrgyzstan, Syria beat Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan beat Brunei, all with a 3-0 scoreline.

At the conclusion of the fourth day, Kazakhstan ranked first in Group A, Singapore in Group B, Kyrgyzstan in Group C and Sri Lanka in Group D, in the boys’ tournament.
