England registered a comfortable win over Sri Lanka in the opening game of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 played today (12th June) at Edgbaston.

After winning the toss and electing to field first, Sri Lanka found themselves under immense pressure from the outset as England’s batters produced a commanding display to post a daunting total of 219 for 1 in their allotted 20 overs.

Opening batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge was the star of the innings, producing a magnificent unbeaten century. She struck 105 runs off just 62 deliveries, smashing 13 boundaries and a six in a flawless batting performance. Wyatt-Hodge received excellent support from wicket-keeper batter Amy Jones, who contributed 53 runs off 38 balls, including four fours and a six.

The pair laid the foundation for England’s huge total with a superb 135-run opening partnership that came in just 13.4 overs. Sri Lanka struggled to find breakthroughs as the English batters maintained a relentless scoring rate throughout the innings.

Skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt then added further impetus in the latter stages, blasting an unbeaten 46 runs from only 22 deliveries. Her aggressive knock featured six boundaries and a six, helping England surge past the 200-run mark.

Faced with a daunting target of 220, Sri Lanka needed a strong start but were unable to build substantial partnerships against a disciplined England bowling attack. Wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing the visitors from mounting a serious challenge in the chase.

Nilakshika Silva emerged as Sri Lanka’s most notable performer with the bat, scoring 39 runs off 33 balls. Her innings included two fours and a six, but she lacked adequate support from the rest of the batting lineup as Sri Lanka were restricted to 132 runs.

England’s bowling unit was led superbly by left-arm seamer Freya Kemp, who produced an impressive spell to finish with figures of 4 for 22 from her four overs.
