Sri Lanka trash India in opening game

The Sri Lankan Youth Netball team put together a solid performance in their opening game of the 9th Asian Youth Netball Championship which commenced yesterday.

The team, led by Gayani Dissanayake, was confident of performing well in the tournament and did not disappoint as they began their campaign by beating neighboring India 102 – 10. Incidentally, Sri Lanka were the only team to cross the 100 goal mark on the opening day, which featured 7 of the 8 top ranked teams of the tournament. The Lankans will be aware that the tournament is bound to get harder with them facing Chinese Taipei on Wednesday and then proceeding to the trophy rounds.

Sri Lanka registered the largest margin of victory on day one, while Brunei were surprisingly good against Asian powerhouse Singapore who registered the smallestmarging of victory on the day. Tournament favourites Malaysia overcame 8th ranked Maldives, while hosts Hong Kong and 3rd ranked Singapore also registered wins.

Malaysia 96 – 16 Maldives

Sri Lanka 102 – 10 India

Singapore 55 – 24 Brunei

Hong Kong 92 – 6 Pakistan

The Lankans will have a rest day today and then recommence their campaign when they face Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.
