Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das put on a massive unbeaten 253-run partnership for the 6th wicket as the hosts ended the first day’s play at 277/5 in the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka played at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
Bangladesh skipper Mominul Haque won the toss and elected to bat first. The hosts made one change to their playing XI from the 1st test, bringing in Praveen Jayawickrama to replace fellow left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya.
Kasun Rajitha, the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka with his best Test figures 4 for 60 in the 1st Test, managed to keep his place in the team after he came in as a concussion substitute for Vishwa Fernando midway through Bangladesh’s 1st innings.
On the other hand, Bangladesh made two changes to their side for the hosts with Mosaddek Hossain and Ebadot Hossain coming in for Shoriful Islam and Nayeem Hasan, who sustained injuries in the 1st Test.
Sri Lanka managed to produce a dream start in the first session’s play as the opening bowlers Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando removed Bangladesh opening pair Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudul Hasan Joy inside the first 2 overs.
Rajitha and Fernando continued to pile misery on the Bangladesh top order as the duo dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque and Shakib Al Hasan in the next three overs as the hosts crumbled to 24/5.
However, in-form batters Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das rescued Bangladesh innings with the massive 253-run partnership, with both getting tons.
The pitch in Dhaka lost its early morning venom and with the ball soft, the Sri Lankan bowlers struggled to make an impact in the next two sessions on day one. As a result, the Rahim-Das partnership profited as the hosts secured two wicket-less sessions after Lunch.
