Sri Lanka will host the 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship for Women which is scheduled to be held from the 23rd to the 30th November. This will be the first time that Sri Lanka will host a FIBA Asia event.

The top three teams in the tournament will be eligible to represent FIBA Asia in the 2014 FIBA World U17 Championship for Women which will be played at Bratislava (Slovak Republic) from July 10-July 20, 2014.

12 teams have been divided into two levels, the ‘elite’ level I and the ‘qualifying’ level II. Teams will be engaged in a round-robin preliminary round within their level while the top four teams from level I will qualify for the semi finals.

Kazakhstan will take on Thailand in the championship opener this year. Previously the championship was held in Jinan, China where Japan emerged champions beating South Korea 102-56 in a one sided affair. China were the champions in the inaugural championship.

Sri Lanka was placed 12th and 10th in 2009 and 2011 respectively, showing there has been improvement within the women’s basketball structure. Sri Lanka will compete in Level II with the likes of Hong Kong , Indonesia , Jordan , Kazakhstan and Thailand.
