Sri Lanka thrashed by South Africa

174

Superb combination of play saw South Africa beat wooden spoonists Sri Lanka by a margin of 72 goals in the Netball World Cup pool C match played at Allphones Arena in Sydney Olympic Park on Monday.

The final score of 89 goals to 17 was more than enough for South Africa who registered their second win and qualified to play in the top 8 league.South Africa’s shooters were at
their best and the shooting accuracy was at 89%.  Playing a complete match in attack and defence, the South African lasses dominated all over the court, using their speed and full-court defence to stifle the Sri Lankan attack. They gained 34 deflections and 25 intercepts.

Thishala Algama was a shining light for Sri Lanka up forward in the goal mouth with defender Gayani Dissanayake, given the hard task of stopping Potgieter, taking a fantastic intercept in the opening quarter, pouncing on a loose South African pass. Both of these Lankan lasses played their heart out but the others were looking like fading stars. The mid-court play of Sri Lanka was completely outclassed by the Proteas which caused the big loss for the Islanders.

In each of the quarters Sri Lanka could manage only 7, 5, 4 goals and a mere one respectively as against 25, 16, 24 and 24 by South Africa.

Lenize Potgieter potted 43 out of 46 and Maryka Holtzhausen 21 out of 24 for South Africa while Thisala had goaled 13 out of 17 attempts.

Sri Lanka will play in the bottom 8 league from Tuesday (August 11, 2015) onwards.
