The opening day of the first leg of the Sri Lanka Super 7’s  kicked-off early this morning at the Nittawela grounds in the rugby crazy hill capitol. The event which was powered by Dialog dished out some phenomenal rugby throughout the day with the franchises and schools’ segments belting out their best.

The atmosphere all through the day was spectacular with the venue dressed in the colours of the teams with a typical sevens fiesta reverberating through the grounds. The Rugby on display was equally flamboyant with a brilliant blend of youthful exuberance from the young school boys while the franchise players put on some clinical sevens rugby.

SLSuper7s-3The 8 franchises were split into two groups with the Walkers CML Vipers, Cargills Gladiators, EYZ Wolves and Etisalat Panthers playing in group ‘A’ while the Access Kings, KBSL Dragons and Softlogic Warriors were grouped with defending champions Mobitel Eagles in group ‘B’  

The Mobitel Eagles continued their winning ways, remaining the only unbeaten team at the of the day’s play. The Eagles scored 10 tries over the course of the day with Lee Keegal running in on three occasions.

Group ‘A’ was a much tighter contest with the Cargills Gladiators taking the top spot with wins over the Etisalat Panthers and Walkers CML Vipers. The Etisalat Panthers also picked up two wins on day one but were relegated to second place in group ‘A’ due to their loss to the Gladiators.

All 8 teams, still have a shot at the title as they now move into the cup quarter-finals set to kick off tomorrow morning.

SLSuper7s-1Buddima Piyarathne of the KBSL Dragons was the top try scorer on day one with 7 tries in just 3 games while Naveen Henakankanamge playing for the Etisalat Panthers ran in 5 tries.

Like in the franchise segment, eight teams took part in the school’s segment, with St. Joseph’s College topping group ‘A’ followed by Dharmaraja College, St. Peters College and Isipathana College while Trinity College topped group ‘B’ followed by St. Anthony’s College, Science College and Kingswood College.

The under 18 teams put on a show for the Kandy crowd with some awesome sevens rugby with Kingswood College, Science College, St. Peters and Trinity College qualifying for the Cup semi-finals.
