Sri Lanka starts off Asian Championships with easy win

The Sri Lankan Netball team played their 1st game of the 10th Asian Netball Championships earlier today and were able to notch up an easy win over Japan, with the scores reading 67-14.

The Championships started on the 31st of July, however with Afghanistan withdrawing from the tournament, Sri Lanka, who were supposed to play their 1st game on Monday, were afforded an extra rest day.

The team left for Thailand a week ago expressing that their one goal during the tournament would be to bring home the Title and they started off in commanding fashion, dominating their opponents right from the word go.

The game was put out of reach of the Japanese in the very 1st quarter when the Lankan lasses were able to go into the break leading 18-1.

In the next 3 quarters the Japanese did manage to score a few more goals but the Lankans continued on their merry way, scoring at will and notching up 19, 12 and 18 in the next three quarters respectively.

It was a result that was expected, as Japan is relatively new to the sport, nevertheless Sri Lanka will be happy to get a win under their belts. The score breakdown is as follows:

The team’s biggest challenge will come next when they face Malaysia, who are several spots ahead of them in the World Rankings, tomorrow.
