Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) announced today that they are planning to include foreign national players in the upcoming 2025/2026 A Division Rugby Season, covering the League, Knockout, and Sevens tournaments.
The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Rugby had initially approved the inclusion of two (02) foreign players per club, in line with the practice adopted in previous years and in recognition of the value such players bring to the domestic competition. However, following detailed discussions with the A Division clubs many of whom raised concerns over budget limitations and short preparation time with a revised arrangement. the ExCo has decided to move forward this season.
Accordingly, for the 2025/2026 season, each A Division club will be permitted to include one (01) foreign player.
Importantly, the decision to allow two (02) foreign players per club will be fully implemented from the 2026/2027 season onward, giving all clubs adequate time to plan and budget accordingly.
This revised approach represents a balanced and inclusive solution addressing the financial concerns raised by the clubs while preserving the strategic importance of foreign player participation, which is seen as vital for raising competition standards, attracting sponsors, and reigniting public interest in domestic rugby.
The inclusion of foreign players also aligns with SLR’s long-term vision of revitalising the sport, enhancing local player development, and strengthening Sri Lanka’s international competitiveness.
Sri Lanka Rugby extends its appreciation to all clubs, sponsors, and partners for their constructive engagement and support as preparations begin for what promises to be a thrilling 2025/2026 rugby season.
