Unconvincing Sri Lanka defeats Hong Kong

Sri Lanka defeated Hong Kong in straight sets to kick start their campaign in the 1st Asian Men’s Volleyball Challenge Cup 2018 …

Sri Lanka produced a much-improved performance compared to the game against Hong Kong, to come out victorious 25-16, 25-18 & 25-23.

Sri Lanka led from the front to win the 1st set with a 9-point margin (25-16). It was much of the same in the 2nd set as the hosts won 25-18. The third set, even though Sri Lanka led by 6 points Malaysia fought back in the dying stages. However, the comeback proved too little too late for the visitors losing 25-23.

For Sri Lanka once again, it was Deepthi Romesh who top scored with 17-points from 14 spikes, 1 block and 2 aces. Wasantha Lakmal added 11-points from 9 spikes and 2 blocks. For Malaysia Jian Qin Sim scored 14-points from spikes. Ranjit Ramu scored 12-points from 9 spikes, 1 block and 2 aces.

Head Coach Dejan Vulicevic was a more-satisfied man than yesterday;

“Yeah, happy. Especially today’s performance was much better than yesterday (against Hong Kong). But I think we have more space to progress. We will have to see the score from other matches and see who will face us (in the knockout stage).”

In the other matches Bangladesh defeated United Arab Emirates 25-22, 25-16 & 25-18. Iraq beat Mongolia 25-14, 25-20 & 25-19. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was made to work hard for their 25-18, 22-25, 25-22 & 25-15 victory over Hong Kong.
