Sri Lanka lost to Iraq 3-1 in the 13th place play-off at the 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Sri Lanka came into the match defeating Hong Kong and hoping to finish in 13th place to end a disappointing campaign. Sri Lanka’s hopes before the tournament was to finish in the top ten.

Sri Lanka started off brightly in the 1st set as they swept aside Iraq to win 25-16. However, they were unable to sustain the momentum as Iraq returned fire to win the 2nd set 25-11.

The 3rd set was a closely contested affair in which Iraq piped Sri Lanka 25-22. In a must win 4th set, Sri Lanka faded away in the latter stages as Iraq won 25-21.

For Iraq Jameel Naseer top scored with 20 points and Challab Islam scored 16 points. Deepthi Romesh scored a game high 22 points for Sri Lanka.
