Sri Lanka to face Olympic Gold Medalists at Commonwealth

The Sri Lanka Rugby Sevens team that qualified for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games this year, has been drawn in the Pool D of the competition that would see 16 countries participating in the men’s category.

The Tuskers will be grouped alongside Olympic Gold Medal winners Fiji, Wales and Uganda and will play each other in the group stage clashes. In addition to the 16 men’s teams, there will be 8 women’s teams that will take part in the competition in April this year.

The fourth-place finish in the Asia Sevens Series that served as a qualifier for the Commonwealth games this year saw both Commonwealth nations Malaysia and Sri Lanka getting their tickets to the games. Meanwhile, Malaysia is grouped in Pool A with South Africa, Scotland and Papua New Guinea.

The Robina Stadium situated in Queensland, Gold Coast, will play host to the rugby sevens action and the games will take place from the 13th to the 15th of April 2018.

After a third-place finish in the Asia Sevens Series 3rd leg that took place in Colombo last year, the Tuskers will see themselves off to Borneo Sevens in Malaysia next month as prep for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
