Sri Lanka Emerging complete come-from-behind win

It was dramatic scenes at Katunayake as Sri Lanka Emerging who conceded a 200 run first innings lead, came from no where to record a stunning 4 wicket win in the 1st unofficial Test between the two nations.

Host skipper Kaushal Silva had brilliantly set the game up with an unbeaten half century on day 3, but his departure early on day four for 91 meant Sri Lanka Emerging’s task would get tougher chasing 310 for victory on a tricky surface which took plenty of spin.

Overnight batsman Sammu Ashan who was well set also fell for 49 with Sri Lanka Emerging still 110 runs away from the target. It was a closely fought game which was always going down to the wire and the dismissal of Manoj Sarathchandra for 16 put the visitors back on top.

Former Sri Lanka U19 captain Kamindu Mendis was hitting the ball well but it was Chamika Karunaratne – the man with a golden touch – who hung around long enough to carry the hosts home after his gritty 61 in the first innings.

Karunaratne and Mendis put on an unbroken 67 runs for the 7th wicket which sealed the game for the hosts as they went up 1-0 in the series.

Mendis played a very matured knock and remained unbeaten on 67* while Karunaratne hit an unbeaten quick fire 32*.

It was a great victory for the hosts and the chief destroyer and the man who set the game up was none other than the experienced Malinda Pushpakumara who picked up 12 wickets in the match.
