Sri Lanka Cricket legend banned from cricket

Sri Lanka former Test captain Sanath Jayasuriya has reportedly been banned from cricket for 2 years after he admitted on failing to co-operate with ICC anti-corruption committee.

Jayasuriya was charged with the breaching articles 2.4.6 and 2.4.7 under the ICC Anti-Corruption code, which deal with failure to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), and obstructing any investigation carried out by the ACU.

(Articles 2.4.6 – Failing or refusing, without compelling justification to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the ACU in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code (by any Participant), including (without limitation) failing to provide accurately and completely any information and/or documentation requested by the ACU as part of such investigation.)

(Articles 2.4.7 – Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code (by any Participant), including (without limitation) concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and/or that may be evidence of or may lead to the discovery of evidence of Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code.)

After the charges were made Jayasuriya responded by a letter mentioning that the chargers weren’t related to match fixing, pitch fixing, or any other similar corrupt activity and he added. “I have always conducted myself with integrity and transparency with matters concerning the sport and I will continue to do so.”

While serving the ban Jayasuriya will not be able to take part in any activity related to cricket which comes under ICC or Sri Lanka Cricket.

(Article 6.5 – No Participant who has been declared Ineligible may, during the period of Ineligibility, play, coach, officiate or otherwise participate or be involved in any capacity in any Match or any other kind of function, event or activity (other than authorised anti-corruption education or rehabilitation programs) that is authorised, organised, sanctioned, recognised or supported in any way by the ICC, a National Cricket Federation, or any member under the jurisdiction of a National Cricket Federation, or receive accreditation to provide media or other services at any official venue or Match)

ICC grants SLC two-week grace period to report corruption

The legendary batsman who has torn apart much celebrated bowling line-ups in his prime, retired from International cricket in 2011 with a record of 13430 runs and 323 wickets in ODI cricket. After his retirement he held the position of chairman of selectors of Sri Lanka team twice.
