Sri Lanka secured major honors at the World Scrabble Championship, WESPA Youth Cup 2022 as they won the ‘Best Team of the tournament’ title.

Adheesha Dissanayake of Gateway College was crowned Champion of the Under 16 category, whilst gaining a spot amongst the overall top 5 players list. His teammate Sandali Vithanage of Musaeus College finished in 8th place in the overall tournament.

She was also named ‘Best Female Player’ for the 2nd consecutive year, as she was the only female player to have made it into the finals in 2021 and 2022.

The event featured a total number of 86 players from the UK, USA, Australia, Germany, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, Singapore, Hong Kong, Nepal & Sri Lanka.

13-year-old Adheesha dominated the tournament from the very beginning, winning 28 games of 36 games in the group stage, 1.5 wins ahead of his nearest opponent.

Sandali Vithanage won 26 games of the group stage games with one tie, and won 6 games in the final stage.

The two youngsters were supported by Hivin Dilmith of Mahinda College who also gained the 12th overall position in the tournament.

Players will experience much international assignments in the upcoming days, starting with the Inaugural Asian Youth Scrabble Championships which is scheduled to be held later this year in your neighboring country, India.
