SLASU Executive Committee elected uncontested

The office bearers of the new Executive Committee for 2013/15 of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union were elected uncontested at the Annual General Meeting of the national governing body for aquatic sports concluded on Wednesday 27th March 2013 at the Institute of Sports Science Auditorium.

Nethru Nanayakkara, the outgoing secretary assumed office as the President and the former assistant secretary Akhry Ameer was elected General Secretary of the association.

According to the new sports regulations gazetted at the beginning of the year the new Executive Committee will serve a term of two consecutive years till March 2015 as opposed to a term of one year previously. 

Nethru Nanayakkara is a former captain of the Royal Water Polo team and represented the country at the 1995 Asian Championships. He is also a national swimmer shortlisted for the 1991 South Asian Games pool and has been a seasoned sports administrator having served various positions in the national body over the years. 

General Secretary Akhry Ameer is a former National Age Group Diving Champion and a diving coach. After a sporting injury he became a diving judge and has also been involved with SLASU in various positions and has been a committed volunteer sports administrator since then. He is also one of the inaugural batch of students reading for a Masters Degree in Olympic Studies conducted by the International Olympic Studies/University of Peloponnese in Greece.

Other members to be elected to the executive committee were vice presidents P.S.K.Dayananda, P.S.P. Dayananda, Chandu Haputhanthri and Hiran Ukwatte, while Shehan Ferdinandis was re-elected as Treasurer and Ulfath Uwais being elected as Assistant Secretary.

The Committee remains optimistic of continuing its initiatives with the main target of securing a corporate sponsor that has been progressing with the support of Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union is the national body for the aquatic sports of swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming. It was formerly known as the National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union before being renamed in 2004.
