Weightlifters shine in Singapore

Sri Lankan weightlifters taking part in the Singapore Weight lifting international competition, which commenced on the 26th of February have so far won five medals with the competition set to conclude tomorrow(27th). This competition also serves as a qualification tournament for the upcoming Commonwealth games.

Sri Lanka won two medals yesterday (25th) in Women’s 49Kg & Men’s 55kg events.

Shrimali Samarkoon who competed in the Women’s 49kg won Gold in the competition managing to clear a total weight of 151kg in her lifts.

Dilanka Kumara won Sri Lanka’s second medal at the competition winning Bronze in the Men’s 55Kg clearing a total of 238Kg.

Day 02 of the competition saw a few veteran Sri Lankan lifters taking the field with two commonwealth medalists going on to win Gold in their respective events.

Commonwealth games medalist Indika Dissanayake won Gold in the Men’s 73Kg category lifting a total of 278Kg which will secure his spot in the commonwealth games.

Sudesh Peiris who also competed in the Men’s 73kg category cleared a total weight of 269Kg and won Silver in the event.

Chathuranga Lakmal who was also among the medals at the last Commonwealth games, booked his spot for this year’s edition in Birmingham, England winning Gold in the Men’s 67Kg category lifting a total of 268Kg.

Sri Lankan Weightlifters will be expected to carry a big portion of Sri Lanka’s medal hopes at the upcoming Commonwealth games. Chathuranga Lakmal, Indika Dissanayake and Hansini Gomes all won medals at the last commonwealth games with weightlifting contributing three of the six medals Sri Lanka won at the competition.
