St. Joseph’s College managed to defeat Thurstan College 26 (4T 3C) – 05 (1T) in the Dialog Schools’ Rugby League as the Josephians got off the mark in the League in a mud-drenched evening at Longdon Place.
The home side got off to a flyer as Sithanga Liyanage dotted down in the 6th minute of the game, giving the Josephians a dream start. Skipper Beeshma failed to add the extras as Thurstan were exploited early on. (SJC 05-00 TC)
The next points of the game came in the 35th minute, on the stroke of half-time, as rain played spoilsport.
St. Joseph’s went into lemons with a try from Sathira Gunathilaka, as the lock forward was unstoppable from close range.
Beeshma added the extras as St. Joseph’s took a 12-point cushion into half-time.
Half-time – St. Joseph’s College 12 (2T 1C) lead Thurstan College 00
The Joes started the second half in similar fashion, scoring in the 6th minute through flanker Ashen Kumara, as No. 4, 5, and 6 all got their names on the scoresheet.
The flanker took a quick tap and crashed over, as the home team was leading comfortably.
Beeshma added the extras as their lead was extended. (SJC 19-00 TC)
Conditions played a massive part, as the muddy and messy outfield didn’t help either team bring about the flair they are known for.
Beeshma extended his points tally with a try assisted by Ashen, as the flanker crashed up off a quick tap, offloading to the skipper for him to dive over.
The try went unconverted, as a late flurry from Thurstan saw them scoring a consolation try to go out on a high in what was yet another sub-par performance for Thurstan College.
