The hosts drew first blood in the third minute when Raveesha Maduwantha calmly slotted over a penalty to give the Cambrians an early lead.
Prince of Wales continued to dictate proceedings and created several promising opportunities but failed to convert their dominance into points. Their persistence eventually paid off when the forwards built momentum with a series of powerful carries following a quick tap penalty, allowing No.8 Suren Nimsara to muscle his way over the line for the opening try of the contest.
Lumbini struggled to gain any attacking rhythm for much of the first half but finally came alive in the closing stages. Vice-captain R.K. Yohan sparked the attack with a perfectly weighted chip over the defensive line, which was expertly gathered by skipper and scrum-half Pawan Nethmina. The nippy halfback showed excellent pace to outrun the Cambrian defence and score under pressure, while Sachintha Induwara added the conversion to reduce the deficit to a single point heading into the break.

Prince of Wales began the second half with renewed intensity and once again controlled the early exchanges. Lumbini’s growing penalty count gifted the hosts valuable territory, and they made full use of the opportunity. After kicking to the corner, the Cambrians executed a powerful rolling maul, with Suren Nimsara once again emerging from the back to score his second try of the afternoon and extend their advantage.
However, from that point onward, momentum swung firmly in favour of Lumbini College. The visitors’ forwards began to assert themselves around the fringes, patiently working through multiple phases before hooker Hasaral Nethsara powered over from close range to narrow the deficit as Induwara converted to take lead for the first time.
Lumbini struck again moments later. Their forwards earned a penalty advantage after several strong carries before Sachintha Induwara produced a clever chip over the defensive line. Replacement playmaker Sashan Prabuddha reacted quickest to collect the bouncing ball and dot down the ball for a crucial try. Induwara maintained his flawless afternoon with the boot by converting.
With the match slipping away from the hosts, Lumbini chased a valuable bonus-point try in the closing stages. Playing expansive rugby, Induwara once again orchestrated the attack with a well-executed kick-and-chase. Fullback Lakshan Perera timed his run perfectly to gather possession and cross the line.Induwara remained perfect from the tee, converting all four tries to cap off an outstanding individual performance.
The victory moves Lumbini a step closer to securing their top-flight status for next season, while Prince of Wales’ defeat officially confirms their relegation from Division 1 Segment A.
