Science overcomes the Pathana trial

Science College, Mount Lavinia put on a stunning performance to win yet another match in the Inter School A Divisions School Rugby League played against Isipathana College, Colombo today.

The score read as 25-16 in favour of the home team at the final whistle.

The home team dominated the entire first half of the game, sticking to their usual game plan and Isipathana found it hard to creep through the defense of the Science side. They were not offered a single penalty in the first half thus summing up the discipline of the home side while on the field. Chathura Gomez failed to add the first points for the game through an easy penalty. Minutes later they were lucky enough to get hold of a loose ball where the forwards supporting each other all the way,managed to score under the post through Lasindu Karunathilake. Chathura made sure to add the extra points this time.

Within two moves, Science scrum half  D. Silva managed to make a fantastic break and was ably assisted by skipper Richard who ran past four defenders consecutively to score under the post once again. Chathura added the conversion. Feeling the pressure, the visitors started working the ball with their three quarters but unfortunately couldn’t find any gaps through the solid defense of the Science players.

At lemons the score was 14-0 in favour of Science College.

After the break, Hirantha Perera drew first blood for the visitors through a sneaky penalty conversion. Realizing their advantage, they thereafter began to use their hefty forwards who covered some valuable distance for them. Through rolling mauls and big hits the visitors were slowly beginning to barge into the Science territory. They were rewarded with another penalty and Hirantha made sure that he added the extra points.

Science was also awarded with two consecutive penalties thereafter with the green lads getting a bit weary after numerous warnings due to line playing offside. Chathura certainly wearing his kicking boots made sure that he added the points for his side. The visitors earned a well deserved try through the use of their bulky forwards who stormed past the Science defense near the corner post. With the prevailing windy conditions Hirantha was unable to add the conversion.

During the latter stages of the game the Green team was trying their level best to come out with different game plans to work the ball towards the Science territory but they just couldn’t get pass the continuous solid line of Science defense. Chathura added the final touches to the game through a well deserved try with the help of Costa and D. Silva just before the final whistle.
