S. Thomas’ College produced a dominant second half performance to get the better of Science College and notch up their second consecutive bonus point victory today (9th May) at the Science College Grounds.
It was the home side that got off to a strong start as breakdown and handling errors continued to haunt the visitors. However, Science College failed to convert pressure into points until the 15th minute, when Science College drove 25 metres forward through a rolling maul before Tharusha Gallage got the ball down.
The response was almost immediate, as the Thomians exerted some forward pressure of their own to help them win a penalty from 5 metres out. It was taken quickly, and Amaan Imran barged through off the second phase. (SC 05 – 05 STC)
More attacking pressure from the hosts wasn’t converted into points. They finally opted for the posts to keep the scoreboard ticking and Oshada Fonseka had no problem bisecting the uprights.
Right on the brink of Half Time, a strong rolling maul from the Thomians sucked in the Science College defence. Rometh Wijesinghe spotted the open space and broke away to touch down and give his side the lead for the first time.
Half Time: Science College 08 (1T, 1P) – 10 (2T) S. Thomas’ College
The visitors came into the second half with a spring in their step, their forwards in particular hit hard at the Science College fringes. After some quick phases, Skipper McKyle Karunaratne muscled his way over to get the ball rolling in the second half. Mayanka Dias got off the mark with the boot.
The Thomians secured their bonus point just a few minutes later, after the forwards once again got them in touching distance with some strong phases, before the gap opened up for Tieshya Aluwihare to dive over. Dias added the extras. (SC 08 – 24 STC)
The visitors got their fifth after some good work from the backs got them within 5 metres, but Roja Karavita couldn’t finish off the move. His forwards came to the rescue as they recycled quickly to set it up for Vishva Akash to go over for the score.
Science College then got their only points of the second half after a well-executed set play off the lineout. They exploited the blindside to allow Gallage to complete his brace.
The visitors got another after a lovely chip ahead from Jovin Albert fell kindly to Rehan Warnasooriya, who finished it off for a well-deserved score.
With the clock in the red, the Thomians added the cherry on top through Zaydaan Akbar, who calmly slotted over a 55 metre penalty to round up a good day’s work for his side.
