Science College took home the U18 schools 7’s rugby title in style

Science College took the cup home as they thrashed Kingswood 24 points to 7.

U18 schools rugby 7’s kicked off on 14th and 15th of February at Royal Complex. The group matches were played on the 14th.  Twenty  teams proceeded to the final stages of the tournament.

 

Group A – Thurstan College finished on top after thrashing St Peter’s College to earn their spot in the Cup quarter-finals.

Group B – It was Kingswood who qualified for cup quarters while Maliyadeva College and Royal Panadura earned spots in the Bowl quarters and Sheild Semis respectively.

Group C -Trinity College stormed their way to Cup quarters finals while Piliyandala Central and Nugawela Central manged to find places in the Bowl quarters and Shield semis respectively.

Group D -Wesley College emerged group winners and booked their spot in the cup quarters as CWW Kannangara College found their way to the Bowl quarters.

Group E  – Was one of the competitive groups this year around. It was S Thomas’s who came on top at the end giving Dharamaraja College only to compete for the Bowl championship.

Group F – Science college found it easy to qualify for the Cup quarters while the two schools from Moratuwa, Prince of Wales and Moratuwa Maha Vidyalaya earned places in the Bowl and Shield quarters.

Group G – Isipathana College came on top in group while Vidyartha found their way to bowl quarters and Lumbini College found the team aiming spot in the Shield Semifinals.

Group H – Royal College Colombo cemented the reaming place in the cup quarters. 

 

Shield Finals 

Lumbini College 24 : Royal College Panadura 00

Lumbini College emerged Shield Champions after beating Royal College Panadura easily in the finals. Royal College Panadura defeated Nugawela Central convincingly in the semis by 22 points to 00 to earn their spot in the finals while Lumbini College thrashed Moratuwa Maha Vidyalaya 36 points to 00 in their semi final. From the beginning of the match Lumbini College looked to be the side who would take the shield home as they did not let Royal Panadura to even get close to their try line. 

 

Bowl finals 

St Peter’s College 00 : Dharamaraja College 35 

Dharamaraja College was lethal on St Peter’s as they went head to head on for the Bowl championship. St Peter’s weren’t given a chance to even get close in scoring as their spectators watched in dismay. Rajans defeated Vidyartha 31 points to 10 in the semi finals while St Peter’s defeated CWW Kannangara College 22 points to 00. It was supposed to be a tight final but Rajans had other ideas. At half time Rajans led by 19 points to 00 giving the Peterites a hard task to overcome in the second half.  The boys from Bambalapitiya looked too tired to uphold any threat to the mighty Rajans. Dharamaraja extended their lead upto 35 without conceding any points at the final whistle. 

 

Plate finals 

Wesley College 27 : Royal College 07

Wesley College cruised their way to take the Plate championship home after beating the home team convincingly in the final. Having lost in the Cup Quarters to Trinity College they made sure they didn’t go home empty handed. They earned their spot on the plate finals after defeating  Thurstan College 27 points to 5 while Royal College on the other hand having lost to Isipathana College in the cup quarters had their hopes up again it finishing the tournament in a good note after defeating their arch rivals S Thomas’s College 14 points to 7. Wesley College was leading from the beginning in the finals, at the half time whistle 15 points to 7. Royal College was in striking distance but Wesley maintained their discipline in the turf. At the final whistle score board stood at 24 points to 7 giving Wesley College an easy win over the home team. 

 

Cup Finals 

Kingswood College 7 : Science College 24 

The main match of the tournament kicked off at 5.15 in the evening between Kingswood College and Science College. It was going to be a hard clash between these two well known Rugby sides in the school rugby arena. Kingswood College earned their spot in the Cup finals after defeating Thurstan College in the Cup quarters 38 points to 00 and Trinity College in the cup semis 14 points to 5. Science College found their spot in the cup finals by defeating S Thomas’s College in the cup Quarters 12 points to 14 and Isipathana College in the cup semis 12 points to 7. Kingswood kicked off proceedings in the final as these two big teams clashed for the Cup. Science College looked pumped up from the start and right to the end. Kingswood side too were upto the challenge but they were lacking discipline out their in the field . Science took advantage t of this and punished their opponents. For Science it was their winger Sanjula Rohan who made the difference in the game. His fabulous hat-trick took away the game from Kingswood. Kingswood scored in the first half with a converted try but other than that one spark, the game was fully controlled by Science. At the final whistle the score board stood at 24 points to 7. Science College taking home the cup handsomely.
