St. Sylvester’s College vs Isipathana College

St. Sylvester’s College Kandy put up a fine all round performance to take major honours against Isipathana College in their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match which ended in a low scoring draw at the BRC ground in Havelock Park on Tuesday.

The Sylvestrians after bowling out their opponents for a paltry 125 runs in the first innings went on to overtake that total as they reached 145 runs with the aid of a superb half century from Hansamal Perera.

The middle order batsman played the sheet anchor role for the visitors despite the fall of wickets at regular intervals at the other end as he held on determinedly to complete a painstaking half century with the support of Sumedha Dissanayake and Nimesha Mendis.

St. Sylvester’s College added further humiliation on the home side by reducing their opponents to 109 for 9 wickets in their second innings before bad light brought an early finish to the proceedings on the second day.

Isipathana of course had the opportunity of putting up an improved batting performance and to make amends for their first innings debacle after they were shot out for just 125 runs well inside two sessions.

However they found run making even more difficult in the second innings and this time it was spinner Sivakumar Tyronne who caused the damage with a splendid four wicket haul for the Sylvestrians.

Isipathana College: 125 and 109-9 (Dinuka Shehan 20, Tharindu Thabrew 19, Sivakumar Tyronne 4/15, Pabasara Perera 2/12, Sumedha Dissanayake 2/22)

St. Sylvester’s College: 145 (Hansamal Perera 52, Sumedha Dissanayake 21, Nimesha Mendis 22, Chameera Dissanayake 4/38, Tharindu Thabrew 3/33, Kelum Bastians 3/34)

St. Sebastian’s 92 Nalanda 55/4

Off-spinner Malinga De Silva was at his best claiming six for 19 runs to bowl out the St. Sebastian’s innings for 92 runs in the first innings but Nalanda lost its grip losing four wickets at stumps on day one of their inter-school cricket match played at Campbell Park today.

At close on day one Nalanda were 55 for 4 with Lahiru Heshan taking three for eight runs

It took only 37.3 overs for the home side to dismantle the innings as the bowlers ran through the innings with some tight and discipline bowling effort. Muditha Fernando was the only batsman to force some resistance with a resilient 35 but none of the others could pose any threat. While De Silva claimed six, Malinga Amarasinghe took two scalps for 31 runs. A total of 14 wickets fell for 147 runs in the face of just 66.5 overs as rain forced a late start and a early end.

Match will be continued today for day two.

St. Sebastian’s College: 92 in 37.3 overs (Muditha Fernando 35, Malinga De Silva 6/19, Malinga Amarasinghe 2/31)

Nalanda College: 55/4 in 29.2 overs (Isuru Samarsinghe 26, Lahiru Heshan 3/8)
