Priyamal Perera and Aravind Akurugoda shared seven wickets first innings between them to lead St. Joseph to a first inning win over De Mazenod in their drawn U-19 inter-school cricket match concluded at Darley Road yesterday. Host needed something out of ordinary in bowling after a despicable batting performance when they were bowled out for 165 runs and Perera and Akurugoda teamed up to dismiss visitors for 130 runs.

De Mazenod were sitting comfortably at 30 for no loss at close on day one but Perera and Akurugoda ran through the innings this morning to take a 35 run first innings lead.  But their batting collapsed for the second time in a row as Shaluka Deemantha who claimed seven for 39 in the first innings took five more for 44 runs in the second innings to finish with a match bag of 12 for 83 runs.

St. Joseph declared at 113 for seven leaving a target of 148 to win. At close De Mazenod were 35 for the loss of 3 wickets with Akurugoda claiming 2 for six runs.

Devananda College Ambalangoda vs Sri Sumangala College Panadura

Twin half centuries from Imesh Udayanga highlighted the inter school under 19 cricket tournament match between Devananda College Ambalangoda and Sri Sumangala College Panadura which ended in a tame draw at Panadura yesterday.

The elegant opening batsman of Devananda College followed up his solid knock of 67 in the first innings with a repeat performance while stroking an unbeaten 61 in the second innings.

In fact Devananda College would have been in deep trouble if not for Imesh Udayanga’s fighting unbeaten half century as the visitors collapsed to 131 for 5 in their second innings after having earlier build up a close first innings lead.

Sri Sumangala College who were well placed at 84 for 1 wicket when they resumed their innings on the second day failed to maintain the same momentum and were dismissed for 218 runs while conceding a slender first innings lead of 12 runs to their opponents.

Even then Sri Sumangala College were well placed to overtake their opponent’s first innings total at one stage with two of their most experienced players Geeth Sanjaya (61) and Viswa Yasas (61) spearheading the way.

However after both players departed Sri Sumangala College completely lost their way and folded up for a modest 218 runs with Sakun Kanchana (3 for 55), Mahesh Sanjeewa (2 for 23), Lahiru Prasanka (2 for 48) and Chatura Dananjaya (2 for 13) running through the innings.

Devananda: 230 (Imesh Udayanga 67, Sakun Kanchana 46, Nimesh Mendis 43, Mahesh Sanjeewa 29, Lahiru Vimukthi 4/72, Hashan Rangana 2/36, Sudesh Sandamal 2/29) and 131-5 (Imesh Udayanga 61 n.o)

Sri Sumangala: 218 (Kushan Akalanka 22, Geeth Sanjaya 61, Viswa Yasas 61, Hashan Rangana 23, Sakun Kanchana 3/55, Sakun Kanchana 3/55,  Mahesh Sanjeewa 2/23, Lahiru Prasanka 2/48, Chatura Dananjaya 2/13)
