School Cricket Summary: Isipathana and St. Peter’s record first-innings victories

A low scoring affair at FTZ grounds Katunayake saw Isipathana College edge out Lumbini College by a mere 3 runs to record a 1st innings victory in their drawn under 19 division one encounter.

After being put into bat, Isipathana College could only manage 114 runs before being bowled out in the 47th over. Left-arm spinner, Chanaka Devinda with 3 for 26 and leg-spinner Tharushan Iddamalgoda with 2 for 5 performed well for the bowling side while left-handed duo of Pramod Maduwantha (36) and Salinda Ushan (34) made solid contributions for Isipathana College.

Lumbini College batting next faltered to the bowling of right arm seamer Pramod Maduwantha who took 6 for 28. Lumbini could only muster 111 runs with only captain Tharushan Iddamalgoda making a significant impact on the scoreboard scoring a half century.

Thanks to the contributions from Shenal Deelaka (43) and Ayana Siriwardena (39) Isipathana College managed to put up 168 runs in the second innings while Chanaka Devinda and Vimukthi Kulatunga picked up 3 wickets each for the bowling side.

Chasing a target of 172 for victory the Lumbini College top order scored 24 in the first 3 overs but 3 quick wickets pegged the scoring rate back and they ended the day at 73 for 3 with the match ending in a draw.

St Peter’s College vs Prince of Wales College 

Dineth Thimodya scored a sensational knock of 173 runs in the first innings of their match against Prince of Wales which helped the Peterites to post a massive 1st innings score. 

After their second outright win for the season against Maris Stella College, St. Peter’s College went head to head with Prince of Wales Moratuwa at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium. Two in-form openers for St. Peter’s College, Dineth Thimodya and Didulana Medis were eager to exploit this batting friendly venue. 

Carrying his form from the previous matches, Dineth smashed a brilliant 173 runs which gave St. Peter’s a very good chance of getting another outright win under their belt. This was his second century in this season and his best playing for his alma-mater. Scoring at a brisk pace helped St. Peter’s to get onto a strong 1st innings score of 329 in just 65.3 overs. His opening partner Didulana Medis also made a valuable knock of 71 runs continuing his form from the previous matches. The pair put up massive partnership of 235 runs for the first wicket. With the ball for Prince of Wales, Thilan Nimesh took a fifer and Savindu Pieris took 4 wickets for 64 runs which helped Prince of Wales to quickly dismiss the middle order after that mammoth partnership for the 1st wicket. 

Prince of Wales managed to survive the first day with just losing 3 wickets for 109 runs, trailing by 220 more runs. Tables turned around in the first session of day 2 as the wickets start to tumble one after the other. Coming back after been held on probation for an illegal action, left-arm spinner Ashanth Malka proved his talent cannot be shattered or diminished. He finished with figures of 5 wickets for 40 runs. Off spinner Vinu Mohotti bagged 4 wickets. Prince of Wales were bundled out for just 151 runs, they lost their last seven wickets for just 42 runs. For the visitors, Hasitha Lanka scored a valuable 46 runs. 

Prince of Wales was asked to follow on in the second innings. Trailing by 178 runs they were under huge pressure. Hasidu Rukshan scored a brilliant unbeaten knock of 72 runs which was the key for their resistance against the strong spin bowling attack of St. Peter’s College. Sadun Soyza also chipped in with a valuable 52 runs helping Prince of Wales to end up at 186 for the loss of 4 wickets at close of play. Vinu Mohotti was again amongst the wickets as he finished with figures of 2 for 54 runs. Dineth Thimodya showed his all-round capabilities as he took 2 wickets for 36 runs.
