Savith Weerasinghe was crowned the Boys U18 champion at the Nationals Tennis Championship 2018 in three sets of scintillating tennis.

8th seed Savith Weerasinghe had an easy run in his first few rounds of the draw. He was faced with 4th seeded Luca Knese in the quarterfinal which he won in straight sets, 6/2, 7/5. Weerasinghe then made easy work out of Vibuda Wijebandara who was seeded second for the tournament; scores read 7/5, 6/0, sending Weerasinghe straight to the final.

Chathurya Nilaweera made his way in to the final, kicking off the tournament as the 6th seed. Nilaweera received stiff competition in his semifinal match from Vikum Jayasuriya who pushed the match to a three setter. Nilaweera pulled off a win in the decider, 6/3, 3/6, 6/2. Nilaweera’s semifinal victim, Ashen Silva went down tamely in straight sets 6/3, 6/3, sending the former to the finals.

Savith Weerasinghe held momentum in the first set claiming it 6/1 and looked to be on his way to an early crowning. However, Nilaweera bounced back with an incredible second set, bringing the match back to equal grounds with a 6/3 victory.

The all-important decider, was a heavy battle with long rallies and many games dragging to advantage. In the end, it was Weerasinghe who managed a 6/2 break to close out the match and the championship.
