Ruwanwella Rajasinghe and Hungama Vijayaba win ‘Top Honours’ at DSI School’s Volleyball Championship

The under-19 boys’ outfit of Rajasinghe Central College, Ruwanwella, and the under-19 girls’ side of Vijayaba National School, Hungama, managed to stamp their class and continue their legacy in the sport by clinching the championships of the DSI Supersports All-Island Inter-School Volleyball Championship 2025, held recently at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.

The junior age group titles were shared among Rajasinghe Central College (under 17 boys), Vijayaba Central College, Maho (under 17 girls), St Mary’s Boys College, Chilaw (under 15 boys), Presidents College, Nattandiya (under 15 girls), Dharmapala National School, Eheliyagoda (under 13 boys), Dammissara National School, Nattandiya (under 13 girls), Elpitiya Primary School, Elpitiya (under 11 boys), and Dammissara National School, Nattandiya (under 11 girls).

Further, for their valuable contributions towards the victories of their schools, K.M.V.C. Wijewickrama of Rajasinghe Central College and W.G. Pavani Pabasara (Vijayaba National School, Hungama) emerged as the most valuable players of the tournament from the under-19segments.

Under 19 Boy’s Final

During the first set, the boys from Nattandiya gave a modest challenge, but the formidable outfit of Rajasinghe Central College managed to go over the line. The second set lived up to every bit of its billing of an all-island championship final, as President College displayed a superb comeback. After a see-saw battle, the game went beyond 30 points, and finally the lads from Nattandiya clinched the set as 33 – 31. In the next couple of sets, the Rajasinghe lads corrected their mistakes in no time and came back strong to clinch the championship.

Under 19 girl’s final

Another edition of the traditional rivalry between Vijayaba National School, Hungama, and Rajasinghe Central College, Ruwanwella, was unveiled during the girls’ U19 final. Throughout the first set, Rajasinghe lasses managed to give a fine fight, but Vijayaba girls managed to win the set in style. During the next couple of sets, Vijayaba National School never allowed the Rajasinghe girls to settle and posted a 03 – 00 thumping victory.

Here, Rajasinghe Central College, Ruwanwella, received a good challenge from the lads from Walasmulla during the first two sets. But the highly technical and tactical play of the Rajasinghe boys broke the rhythm of the Walasmulla boys, and Rajasinghe easily clinched a massive 03 – 00 victory to gain the coveted championship.

The first set of the under-17girl’s final was a thriller, and after multiple twisters in the set, the Vijayaba National School, Hungama, took the win with a whisker of margin. During the next couple of sets, Vijayaba Central College, Maho, came back strong with back-to-back victories.

The fourth set was crucial to the lasses from Hungama, and they displayed a toe-to-toe battle there. After multiple turnarounds, the Maho girls clinched the title with a breakthrough victory by shattering the expectations.

Though the lads from Dharmapala College tried their best to resist against the strong opposition, the lads from Chilaw showcased superior attacking and tactical play to clinch the championship.

The President’s lasses brilliantly fought from the start to finish, and their all-round excellence ensured a decisive victory.

In this final, the lads from Dharmapala National School won the first set after a tough battle. After a close tussle, St Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, edged out their opponents to equalise the game. In the crucial third and final set, the lads from Eheliyagoda came up with a stunning performance to outclass their rivals as 21 – 12 points to complete a 02 – 01 set victory.

But the lasses from Nattandiya lived up to their expectations and delivered a majestic performance to win the game with two straight-set victories.

In the youngest age category of the boys’ finals, the two Southern Provincial representatives, Elpitiya Primary School and Gamini National School, Galle, clashed for the supremacy. But the lads from Gamini National School had no answers against the superior display of the lads from Elpitiya Primary School, as they won the game with a clean sweep.

The small and energetic girls from Dammissara National School, Nattandiya, and Dunkannawa Kanishta Vidyalaya, Nattandiya, displayed an eye-catching performance at the under-11 girls’ final. Though Dunkannawa Kanishta Vidyalaya played well in the crucial game, they made a few mistakes later against the high-quality play of Dammissara National School, Nattandiya. Hence, the girls from Dammissara National School went away with a crunching victory to clinch the title.
