Royal wins division II & promotion; Kavisigamuwa wins girls’ championship

Royal College, Colombo defeated Al Aqsa College, Kinniya 3-1 in the Sri Lanka Schools Association division II final while Kavisigamuwa Central College defeated Madampe St.Sebastian’s College on penalties to win the U19 Girls’ Championship.

With this win Royal College earns themselves the promotion to division I championship next year.

At half time the scores read 1-1 while Sri Lanka U19 cap Naveen Jude inspired the Reid Avenue lads in the second half as they scored two unanswered goals.

It was the winners who got on the scoreboard first with Captain Tahiru Gunasekara scoring in the 13th minute from the penalty spot after Naveen was fouled by an Al-Aqsa player. 7 minutes later Al Aqsa’s Mohamed Suhail equalized as both sides played at a hectic pace till half time.

In the 2nd half Royal defense was all at sea as Al Aqsa created three goal scoring chances, but to their disbelief squandered all of them with just the goalkeeper, Mustaq Ramsi to beat.

With luck on their side, Royal pressed hard for the lead and got it when the charismatic Naveen Jude danced his way into the box and delivered a thundering shot to give the Reid Avenue boys the lead.

He could have added another few minutes later, but with the goalkeeper rushing on he could only guide the ball just wide of the post.

However, Royal sealed the championship and promotion when the 6’ 2’’ Sarvesh Yogendran rose the highest to head home from a corner.

Kavisigamuwa College v St.Sebastian College

Kavisigamuwa Central College defeated St.Sebastian College, Madampe 3-2 on penalties after the match ended goalless at full time.

The pressure was on St.Sebastian as they failed to score from the first penalty while Kavisigamuwa converted theirs.

The roles were reversed in the next round of spot kicks but Kavisigamuwa Central College scored from the next two to win the championship.
