Round 6 – The Canadian Grand Prix – Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve

That’s how I would want the Merc engines to be for the rest of the season !!

The Canadian Grand Prix was one of the most exciting races this season with Mercedes losing their power units were equal to the rest of the pack (OK, so they were a bit slower than the others). This lead to a whole new world of F1 entertainment with the Red Bulls and Force India’s with Williams fighting for the top position with Merc. In the end, it was Danial Ricciardo who took the honors with his much deserved maiden win in F1.

The race start was normal at the top of the pack with the bottom of the pack experiencing the coming together of the two Marussias when Chilton bumped on to Jules taking both of them and Marusia out of the Canadian GP on the very first lap. This brought in the safety car for 5-6 laps which meant that all cars on the grid didn’t have to worry much about saving fuel for the race which meant they could race full throttle! This suggests that F1 should increase the fuel limit by another 10 kg to 110 kg to see more action. There had been much discussion around this increase without action.

For once, we all thought that Massa was going to win the race in no time given the pace of his Williams. However, either over enthusiasm or due to Perez breaking very early, Massa and Perez came together in the penultimate lap resulting in a spectacular, high-speed  F1 crash earning both “0” points. It was such a shame given that both the drivers had a super race till then.

The most unlucky during the race was Lewis Hamilton. Adding insult to injury, after the Merc power units failed, Lewis lost his breaks too. It was a brilliant drive from Lewis till then and he most probably could have gone on to win the race as he was already in front of Nico after overtaking Nico during the final pit stop.

There is nothing much to talk about the rest of the field. Let’s see what the drivers have to say. Click here to check out the drivers’ perspective.
