The singles finals of the first week of the Astoria Women’s Future cup was concluded earlier this evening at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association tennis courts.

The French player Josephine Boualem advanced through to the finals of the tournament having triumphed against the Serbian player Tamara Curovic in the semi-finals going up to the third set to decide the match. The first set was a close call but J. Boualem managed to win it 7 games to 5 although she lost the plot on the game in the second set and lost it 1 game to 6. J. Boualem recovered getting her head in the game winning the third set 6 games to 1. (7-5, 1-6, 6-1).

On the other side of the draw, Riya Bhatia from India managed to make it to the semi-finals to meet Alice Gillan the British player. The Indian player dominated the court winning the match in the first two sets itself 6-4 and 6-2. Riya Bhatia managed to advance to the finals of the tournament to play against Josephine Boualem.

The first set of the final game was a close encounter as both players were neck to neck. R. Bhatia and J. Boualem both got an equal number of aces and double faults during the game as both players were equally matched. Both players even got an equal amount of breakpoint victories until R. Bhatia got lucky and won the final deciding game giving her the first set 7 games to 62.

However, the second set went a different direction as J. Boualem lost the plot on the game and R. Bhatia got a few quick points off aces. She dominated the breakpoints 3/8 giving her an easy victory in the second set of the all-important final match. R. Bhatia won the second set 6 games to 1 giving her the 1st place during the finals of week 01 of the Astoria Women’s Future tournament.

The doubles finals are still yet to be played as the last finalist is yet to be decided. The Chinese and Canadian duo Isabelle Boulais (CAN) and YeXin Ma (CHN) sealed their spot in the finals triumphing against the Indian team of Ramya Nataraja and Rishika Sunkara winning in the first two sets 6-3, 6-4.

The final semi-final match is yet to be played against Josephine Boualem (FRA), Andrea Ka (CAM) and Sasha Alexander (AUS), Yuqi Sheng (CHN). The winner of this semi-final will advance to play against the Chinese and Canadian duo.
