Richmond’s last minute try breaks the Aloysian’s hearts

St.Aloysius College, Galle was disappointed by Richmond’s Kavindu Malhara try in last 3 minutes, in their annual rugby encounter Friday evening.

The 22nd Galle Police Cup Rugby encounter between St.Aloysius Collge,Galle and Richmond College was held on 9th of October at the Koggala BOI Grounds.

In the first half of the match St.Aloysius College showed some spectacular playings at koggala.In the 25th minute,Aloysians won a Penalty try to lead the score board with 7-0.From that moment, it seemed Richmond College was going out of the game.

Aloysian’s continued pressure seemed to disturb the Richmondites game plan. However an fantastic try by Heshan Kavinda in 35th minute brought Richmond College storming back in to the game.The score displayed on the board by the half time whistle was 7(SAC)-5(RCG).

The second half of the match was a tough one for both teams.Up to the 76th minute Aloysians lead the score board.But Kavindu Malhara’s try in final 3 minutes totally disappointed Aloysian fans.

Finally Richmondites recorded their 10th Annual Rugby encounter victory.

Isuru Dulaj from Richmond College won the best player award for his extraordinary playing..

Galle Police Cup is the only Rugby encounter played in Galle and it’s history backs up to the 90s decades.

The game between these 2 school were introduced to the both schools in 1991.In 1992 Richmond College & St.Aloysius’ College Galle met on the field for first time. Since then the encounter has gone from strength to strength with the Galle following enjoying the annual encounter. Todate 22 matches have been played and out of them Richmond College won the trophy 9 times and St.Aloysius College has taken it 11 times ensuring a tough and equal tussle each time. In the years of 2011 and 2014 ended up in a draw.
