A remarkable day in basketball

There are victories in sport, and then there are moments that remind us why sport matters far beyond the scoreboard.

One such moment unfolded at the Under-16 Tier 2 All Island Basketball Tournament, when the boys from the School for the Deaf Ratmalana stepped onto the court and created a memory that will live forever in Sri Lankan school basketball.

It could have been assumed that the purpose of the game was just to participate, but these young boys proved otherwise. With heart, courage, and unbelievable determination, they battled their way to a stunning victory over Science College.

And then came the moment no one in the arena will ever forget.

With the last whistle blowing through the court, the boys of Ratmalana did not hear the signal to let them know the game was over. They were all standing, looking around to make sense of what had just taken place. Their coach, Gratian Anthony, former Air Force and St. Sebastian’s College player, turned towards the boys with an action expressing happiness, pride that they had won the game.

A massive salute to Gratian Anthony for the incredible work he continues to do with these young athletes. What he has built is far greater than a basketball team, he has built belief, confidence, and hope.

This is only the beginning for the boys from Ratmalana. The road ahead is long, but after witnessing this moment, one thing is certain, their story is going to inspire an entire nation.

A proud day for the team.
A proud day for the coach.
A proud day for Sri Lankan sport.
