In the U 18 final stages worked off yesterday at the Royal College Sports Complex, Prince of Wales College Moratuwa slid past Vidyartha College Kandy to take Bowl championship whilst Dharmaraja College Kandy over-powered DS Senanayake easily to take Shield.
Prince of Wales’ vs Vidyartha – Bowl
Prince of Wales College managed a hard fought win against Vidyartha College in the final to claim the bowl in the “Milo” under 18 ‘Fifteen a side’ rugby tournament.
Vidyartha College started brightly as they applied tons of pressure on the Prince of Wales defence. The good start by the boys from Kandy paid off as they were rewarded with a try in the 15th minute of the game as S.N. Kaluarachichi picked the ball from the ruck and scored in the corner. C.D. Perera missed the conversion as the score remained at 5-nil in favour of Vidyartha College.
Prince of Wales hit back right from the restart as Prince of Wales prop forward W.A.B.A. Weerasinghe ran through the heart of the Vidyartha defence and scored to gain the lead in the game for the first time for Prince of Wales College. Fly half T.Y.D. Pieris converted the try successfully and ended the half with a 2 point lead. Vidyartha 05-07 Prince of Wales.

Beginning the second half the way they finished the first half, Prince of Wales pressed the Vidyartha defence and the pressing paid off as a spectacular chip kick from Fly half T.Y.D. Peiris was neatly read by centre B.N.P. Mendis as he picked up the bouncing ball and scored under the post for Prince of Wales College. Fly half T.Y.D. Peiris successfully converted the try to extend their lead to a sizeable margin. Vidyartha 05-14 Prince of Wales.
Vidyartha managed a last gasp try as prop forward R. Fernando scored following pressure on the Prince of Wales defence. C.D. Perera missed the conversion as the game drew to a close. With the win Prince of Wales bagged the Bowl in the “Milo” under 18 ‘Fifteen a side’ rugby tournament.

Dharmaraja vs DS Senanayake – Shield
Dharmaraja College Kandy just motored over D S Senanayake College in the final to claim the shield in the “Milo” under 18 ‘Fifteen a side’ rugby tournament.
Both teams began brightly but neither team could breach the opposition defence in the first minutes of the first half. But Dharmaraja College managed to score first as fly half H.C.S. Perera managed to throw a marvellous flick pass to winger R.R. Wickramanayake as he scored under the post to open the scoring for the Rajans. G.I. Deshapriya converted the try successfully and ended the first half with the lead. Dharmaraja 7-nil D.S. Senanayake.

D.S. Senanayake started the second half on the front foot as they applied a huge amount of pressure and were awarded with a penalty try as Dharmaraja were penalized for continued infringements in their own 5 meter line. Fly half M.A. Muzmi’s conversion from under the post was spectacularly charged down. Dharmaraja 7-5 D.S. Senanayake.
Following the lead being cut down to two points, fly half H.C.S. Perera orchestrated the next move as he tidily set up full back G.I. Deshapriya to score and extend the Rajans lead 9 points. G.I. Deshapriya converted the try successfully. Dharmaraja 14-5 D.S. Senanayake.
Dharmaraja extended their lead further as Full back G.I. Deshapriya returned a kick handsomely as he stepped and weaved his way through the D.S. defence as if they were not present and scored under the post. G.I. Deshapriya converted the try successfully. Dharmaraja 21-5 D.S. Senanayake.
With the game out of the grasp of the opposition, the DS boys they threw the kitchen sink at the Rajans. Dharmaraja College managed to capitalize on a mistake from the DS boys as winger R.R. Wickramanayake booted a loose ball and scored under the post to seal the victory and with it the shield for the Rajans. G.I. Deshapriya converted the try successfully. Dharmaraja 28-5 D.S. Senanayake.
