R.K.Premanayake scored twice in the 2nd half as Gemunu Watch (Highlanders) made up for their last year’s final loss with a clinical performance defeating Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (Waggoners) 2-0 in the Sri Lanka Army Inter Regiment Football Tournament final at the Race Course International Stadium.

Gemunu Watch & Service Corps enter Inter Regiment final

Gemunu Watch (GW) stormed past Military Intelligence Corps and Sri Lanka Army Service …

Gemunu Watch came into the final avenging their last year’s final loss to Military Intelligence Corps with a thumping 3-0 win while Army Service Corps had a slender 1-0 win against Sri Lanka Armoured Corps.

It was Service Corps who started off well dominating territory and creating a few chances. The Army skipper Madushan De Silva was menacing in the early stages and once his efforts was tipped over the bar by Highlanders’ goalkeeper T.S.Priyashan.

Towards the latter stages of the first half Highlanders came back into the game as Priyantha Kumara saw his powerful low effort saved by Waggoners and Army goalkeeper Nilanka Kumara.

Priyashan was once again the savior for the Highlanders when he tipped over a pile-driver from 35 yards out as referee Nivon Robesh whistled for half time.

Half time – Gemunu Watch 0 – 0 Army Service Corps

Within two minutes of the restart Gemunu Watch stunned Service Corps with the first goal coming from an unmarked R.K.Premanayake, who had ample time to find his spot from close range.

That goal opened the game as Service Corps went after the equalizer. They nearly had it minutes later when Madushan De Silva’s free-kick bounced off the crossbar and into the path of a Service Corps player but he could only head it to the ground from point blank range.

Gemunu Watch were content on defending their one goal advantage and counter attacked whenever they had possession. The profited from it ten minutes from time as Premanayake finished off a swift counter attack to make it 2-0.

Service Corps tried valiantly and after going a man down due to red card they too lost heart giving Gemunu Watch the win.
