Players from North shine at the Independence Day TT championship 2013

The Independence day celebrations All Island (unranked) Table Tennis Championship – 2013 was held on 02nd & 03rd February 2013 at S Thomas’ Indoor Stadium, Mt Lavinia with the participation of the North TT players.

 

This event was held for the first time in the history of Table Tennis in Sri Lanka. The tournament was conducted by the Asian / German Sports Exchange program (AGSEP) in collaboration with the TT Association of Sri Lanka, Jaffna District TT Association, and Vavuniya District TT Association. It was a tremendous success, particularly to promote and foster relationship between the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim Community.

Sixty five players from Jaffna District and 55 players from Vavuniya District participated in this event. (120 players) In addition Coaches, Teachers & Masters in Charge of the Schools and parents from Jaffna District & Vavuniya District were present, totaling 150 participants. 

The main objective of this event was to give an opportunity for the new players, especially of the Jaffna District and the Vavuniya District to participate and show their abilities and passion for the game.

The sponsorship of  this event was spearheaded by Abans Ltd who were kind enough to provide food to all participants from the Jaffna District & Vavuniya District. The co – sponsors were Nilaveli Peace Village who provided Medals for the winners and Aquarius Beach Hotel who provided certificates for all the participants.

14 events including Men’s / Women’s / Under 08 / Under 10 / Under 12 / Under 15 / Under 18 / Under 21 /

Both Boy’s & Girl’s singles events were worked out during two days.

A high standard of sportsmanship was shown by the Jaffna District & Vavuniya District players and players from south. The Asian / German Sports Exchange program (AGSEP) in collaboration with the TT Association of Sri Lanka, took all efforts to exhibit a high standard of play by conducting various Coaching camps regularly. About 75% of the participants from the Jaffna District & Vavuniya District have come to Colombo for the first time. During the two days they were shown the prominent places in Colombo.

The Most Outstanding players of the tournament

S.Sinthuya of Union College, Jaffna was adjudged the Most Outstanding player of the tournament in the women’s section. She won all three events (Under 18 Girls Singles / Under 21 Girls Singles / Womens Singles) to which she entered. She is the best player from the Jaffna District and she had won many titles earlier at the Jaffna District & North and East TT Championships.

Her efforts should be appreciated for she had to travel more than 800km up & down to take part in this championships.

In the Men’s section Tharindu Perera of Isipathana College Colombo was the Most Outstanding player of the tournament in the Men’s section and he won the Under 21 Boy’s Singles / Men’s Singles events.

The Asian / German Sports Exchange programme has planned to organaise thew following projects to further promote and develop TT in North and East.

01. To initiate a pool trainning for the best 16 players in Vavuniya.

03. To organaise an All Island ( unranked) Table Tennis Championship – 2013 in Jaffna.

04. To inaugurate TT in Killinochchi District.

05. To inaugurate TT in Ampara  District.( Akkaraipattu area)

06.To organaise Vavuniaya District Table Tennis Championship – 2013 in Vavuniya.

07. To organaise Jaffna  DistricTable Tennis Championship – 2013 in Jaffna.

08. To organaise North and East TT championships ( Venue will be notified later)

09. To organaise an Awards Ceremony for North ans East TT Players.
