Pelwatte To Kick Start Motor Rally Championship

The Motor Racing Association (MRA) will host Round 1 of the MRA Rally Championship 2014 at Pelwatte on the 15th and 16th of February.

This will also be the first time in Sri Lanka where two rallies will take place in once event as there will also be a TSD Speed Rally for novice entries alongside the main event.

The MRA also commemorated their 16th Annual General Meeting this week, as the President of the MRA Daivd Todd addressed the media on the future plans and recent events of the MRA.

Richard de Soyza, who is a pioneer in racing, and is also one of the founders of the MRA went on to explain the potential that Sri Lanka has in motorsport. He believes that the terrains in Sri Lanka truly match up to international standards, and there are so many provinces and areas with over 15-20 venues which are still to be discovered.

Veteran races Rizvi Farook, Aravinda Premadasa and Ashan Silva addressed the gathering on the difference rallying brings to motor sports, and consider it to be an ultimate experience that is filled with exciting adrenaline rushes.

Rallying is one area of driving which you have to depend only on your ability, your car and your co-driver against the clock making it a totally different challenge.

Speaking to the media, Chief Plotter Ameen Deane explained the inclusion of the Novice TSD rally where drivers could test their skills which also help gain some interest in motor racing as these novices could then graduate from novice to top class level driving. He also believes that two rallies on the same day is not an easy task to control, but it is a challenge accepted by the MRA.

The MRA had also organized a very interesting Harley Davidson Rally late last year, which included riders from different nationalities. The rally covered nearly 50-60% of Sri Lanka and an expanded version of the rally will be hosted this year as well with a greater amount of riders.

KIK Cola will be the official beverage partner of the MRA Rally Championship, as Round 2 and Round 3 will be held later this year.

The closing for the participation applications will be the 7th of February 2014.
