Nishangan Nadarajah to play in US Tennis Premiership

Peterite and national seeded player Nishangan Nadarajah will leave to the USA shortly in order to be a part of the highest college level tennis tournament there; the NCCA Division I tennis premiership.

A former Davis Cup player, Nishangan has been an eminent tennis player in the national seeded list and will establish another milestone with this listing as he will be competing alongside the top seeded tennis players in the United States. The 19 year old who was the former Under 18 national champion in 2014 is also an ITF junior ranked player with a ranking of 407.

Coming from Negombo, Nishangan attended Wijayaratnam Hindu College prior to joining St. Peter’s College where he was nurtured in the sport to finally end up in the top 10 in the country. He is currently on a fully paid scholarship at the Alabama A & M University and will take part under the Alabama University title.

Breaking the elite stereotype in the sport, Nadaraja had been one of the individuals who came up the ranks the hard way from the days at Negombo through to his career at St. Peter’s College. Dedication and commitment is what Nadaraja mentions as his pillars of success while he owes his career to his school coach Dinith Pathiraja who spotted his talent and gave him a hand.

Nadaraja will play in the local US circuit amongst the heavyweights and this will no doubt be a learning curve for the young Sri Lankan. With more than six months to go for the 2016 national title run, his overseas exposure will definitely be a valuable experience when he returns to the island.
