Junior national champion and seeded player Nethmi Waduge created history when she defeated Netherlander Daevenia Achong to win the ITF Junior Circuit Week 2 marking a new high in Sri Lankan tennis history.

The ITF Junior Circuit week is a continuing series under the International Tennis Federation which is the international body for the sport and progress in circuit week will add points to your respective rankings internationally. Colombo has been a regular host to the Grade 5 rated tournament and the tournament progresses for a duration of three weeks.

It was a tough challenge for the 18-year-old Waduge to come through to the finals of the second week competing against the heavyweights in the international circuit. The first week that was played in SSC saw her finishing in the quarterfinals but this around, she has made Sri Lanka proud by having a top podium finish.

Gaining entry via a wild card entry, she defeated Achong of Netherlands 2-6, 6-4 and 6-4. It was remarkable of her to fight back having lost the 1st set to the European national.

She qualified for the finals defeating Sara Nayar of Malaysia 6-2, 5-7 & 6-4  who was a 4th top seeded player.

Meanwhile, there was no luck for the rest of the Sri Lankans in the Girls’ main draw while no player went beyond the 1st round in the Boys’ competition as well.

The third and final week of the ITF Junior Circuit Week will commence tomorrow at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association playing courts.
