Nethmi Waduge Stuns Amritha Muttiah to Take Women’s Open

The biggest upset in the Colombo Championships;  young Nethmi Waduge went on to defeat the defending national champion, the veteran Amritha Muttiah to take home the Women’s Open Title.

The finals of the Women’s Open worked off in the SLTA clay courts last evening for a clash between the top two seeds in the country; Amritha Muttaiah and Nethmi Waduge.

The game started off with Nethmi taking the upper hand in the first set itself as she went on to register the first set under her name, defeating Muttiah 6-2. The second set was the decisive set as it was a must win game for Muttiah in order to survive.

After a close tussle, it was the 19 year old Nethmi Waduge who emerged victorious with scores reading 6-4. It was a good run for the young Nethmi Waduge from the start and shows prospects for greater achievements.

Meanwhile the Boys final clash between Heera Ashiq and Ashwin Vijayaragavan will take place this evening in the clay courts.

Also in the news is the update of the rankings where top seed Thangarajah Dineshkanthan has shifted two places down to third place while Heera Ashiq is at the top seed position.

The Men’s doubles Semi Finals will see Heera Ashiq and Thanveer Ashiq taking on Thangarajah Dineshkanthan and Shamal Dissanayaka in the first semi-final. Rohan De Silva and Jayendra Wijesekara will play the second second semi final against Sanka Athukorale and Yasith De Silva.

The games will resume at 1230
