The Navy men & women were crowned champions as they swept the Ellawala Water Polo league championship yesterday (24th) winning both the men’s and women’s titles at the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex.
The Ellawala Water Polo league is one of Sri Lanka’ premier Water Polo league tournaments under the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union and was held over the past two weekends starting from the 16th of July 2016. The final day of the league commenced on the 24th of July and the title battle in the men’s division was between Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Navy.
The Navy men’s team were unbeaten throughout the league securing landslide victories over their opponents during the four days of competition. The only instance where the Sailors had a tough tussle was in the encounter between Army where they edged through to a 7-5 win. Navy’s biggest wins came against SSC and Royal College Union Aquatic Club which they won 25-3 & 15-0 respectively.
The final encounter that proved to be the league decider was the Royal College vs Navy game. Navy progressed to score 7 goals in the first two-quarters while Royal College only had the luck of scoring after the third quarter. With the Sailors cruising to 11 goals, Royal College got themselves to four goals.
The overall standings of the four days saw Navy ahead of Army with a total of 16 points while coming in second place, Army got themselves 14 points. The third place in the Men’s went out S. Thomas’ College with 10 points in total.
In the Women’s tournament, it was Navy who won the title, with two wins and a draw from their three matches. Navy drowned Air Force with a 10-1 scoreline while edging out Ladies’ College 7-4. The draw came against Visakha Vidyalaya, with the scores 4-4. Visakha Vidyalaya took second place honours and in third was Ladies’ College.
