Lanka Sportreizen, A leading destination management company in Sri Lanka, which has been in the forefront of promoting tourism through sports and adventure, is set to partner with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs to conduct a national surfing event in late September.

The Covid-19 pandemic affected the local and international sporting landscape to a great degree over the past 5 months, interrupting the schedules of many national sporting bodies. In fact, before the outbreak of the deadly virus, plans were afoot to conduct a similar championship in the Eastern Coast with the support of the World Surf League – however, those plans had to be abandoned as a result of the pandemic.

Now, in a bid to revive both sports and tourism on the advice off Hon. Namal Rajapakse, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs,  who himself is a keen surfer, Lanka Sportsreizen is making arrangements to organize and conduct an Open/ National surfing event with the blessing of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. The Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka will also be involved in the organization of the event which is set to coincide with World Tourism Day which falls on the 27th of September. The championship will be held on the 26th and 27th of September in Arugambay on the Eastern Coast of Sri Lanka.

It is hoped that the event will spark the interest of the sporting community which has been starved of action for the past few months. This is particularly true for the eastern coast of Sri Lanka which has not seen any events since January 2020. The event is expected to provide much needed relief to the businesses is surrounding the Arugambay area as well. It will be open to locals as well as foreigners living in Sri Lanka, who will be able to show off their skills to the large number of spectators expected to be present at the event.

The event will be sponsored by Mobitel Sri Lanka and Lin Asia Holdings.
