Experienced Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim became the first-ever Bangladesh batter to be dismissed “handling the ball” and obstructing the field in the ongoing second test match against New Zealand in Dhaka.

In the 41st over of Bangladesh’s first innings, Rahim played a defensive shot against Kyle Jamieson and touched the ball with his right hand despite it never looked like it was going onto hit the stumps. The on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker send it to TV umpire Ahsan Raza after an appeal from New Zealand players. The TV umpire indicated out for obstructing the field as he became the 11th player out-handling the ball in international cricket.

According to the MCC, “handled the ball” was added under “obstructing the field” to streamline the mode of dismissals in 2017. Also, the bowler does not get the credit for this wicket according to the rules, and hence, Mushfiqur Rahim’s wicket has not been credited to Kyle Jamieson.
